How to Replace a Broken Glass Pane

If you have a broken glass pane in need of replacement or repair, here is what you need to know about doing it yourself:

Make sure you have these tools and materials on hand:

Tools You'll Need

  • Heavy gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Heat gun
  • Putty knife
  • Tape measure
  • Small wire brush
  • Putty
  • Linseed oil
  • Glaziers push points

Then, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Remove the Glass—Wearing your heavy work gloves and glasses for protection, remove the glass. You may need your heat gun to soften the old glazing compound.
  • Step 2: Clean the Window Frame—Use your small wire brush to remove any remaining residue on the window frame. You may need a drop of linseed oil on the brush to help condition the wood so it will bond with the glazing compound.
  • Step 3: Measure and Purchase Glass—Carefully and precisely measure the area that needs to be glazed. Bring your measurements to your local hardware store to order the glass.
  • Step 4: Replace the Glass—When you are ready to replace the glass, place two push points on the sides of the glass, around all four edges. Then, with the putty knife at an angle, apply a smooth line of putty.
